Overview:
Hitler's intransigence in the face of the Allied breakthroughs in Normandy and Provence had put Army Group G in southern France at risk of annihilation. American forces managed to block the Rhone Valley. The headquarters of the Nineteenth Army was now encircled. General Wietersheim, commanding the 11th Panzer Division, immediately ordered all available units to attack the enemy from on the move. Scattered amidst 11th Panzer-Division’s armor, the 198th Infanterie-Divisiion, two Luftwaffe air defense regiments and a miscellany of support personnel tried to force their way north towards the Reich. Any hope of an orderly withdrawal was abandoned; orders were given to form battle groups and simply fight a way through.Attacker: German (Scattered elements of Heeresgruppe G)
