Overview:

The Ardennes offensive saw the Germans using WW1 style “Hutier” tactics in which specially trained and equipped infantry battalions would infiltrate the American pickets in order to seize vital traffic routes intact. These tactics allowed the surprise to be complete, as the landsers approached the U.S. perimeter foxholes before dawn, with nary a suspicion among the sleepy G.I.s. However, once they realized their lines were being breached, the tired, but veteran 28th Infantry soon raked the enemy with fire from several sides.
