Overview:

The Russians began an artillery bombardment of the Mannerheim Line on1 February 1940 as preparation for their second major offensive against the Finnish fortified positions. In the Summa sector alone, Soviet artillery fired over 300,000 shells over a period of ten days. In the “Lahde” sector, east of Summa Lake was the “Finger”-strongpoint consisting of two large bunkers constructed at a rumored cost of a million markka each. These two bunkers included Sj4 “Poppius” bunker and the specifically-named Sj5 “Millionaire Bunker”, the latter consisting of two casements connected by a reinforced, partially underground system. Early during the bombardment, heavy guns from the Soviet 402nd Howitzer Artillery Regiment inflicted serious damage to “Millionaire”, as a result it was unable to adequately support its partner “Poppius” bunker during the initial Russian infantry-armor assault on 11 February and “Poppius” was captured within hours. If the Russians could also capture “Millionaire” they would open a hole in the Mannerheim Line and clear the road to Viipuri. In the early morning of 12 February, the Russians began a second assault.
