Overview:
The end was near. The Germans had been surrounded for more than two months and were near the end of their ability to put up any resistance. One last bright spot was atop the burial mound. The Germans had concentrated the remnants of several batteries of field guns there. Up until now, they had provided the necessary support to keep the army able to actively resist repeated Russian attacks. Now they were down to the last few rounds of ammunition.
