Overview:
Due to unexpectedly low tides, the first wave of Marines at Tarawa had to wade to shore, instead of hitching a ride to the beach on Amtracs. Nevertheless, the Marines of 2/2 Battalion reached Red Beach 2 relatively unscathed, although the unit did lose its CO. The respite would not last long. Japanese soldiers under General Shibasaki were peering back over the edge of their holes and through pillbox vision-slits, after a largely ineffective American barrage lifted.Attacker: American (USMC) (2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines)
