Overview:

After six months refitting in France, the 6.Panzerdivision returned to the Eastern Front in late November to take part in the relief of the 6.Armee surrounded in Stalingrad. Normally, the unit would arrive in assembly area behind the frontlines; however the Soviet spearheads were pushing westwards hot on the heels of the retreating Romanian forces. The 6.Panzerdivision was forced to detrain in a combat zone. After securing its assembly near Kotelnikovo, the 6.Panzerdivision continued its build up in preparation for the upcoming offensive. The commanding officer Generalleutnant Raus opted to create a series of mutually supporting strongpoints backed up by a powerful mobile reserve. One such strongpoint was Pokhlebin. Late in the afternoon, Russian cavalry of the 81st Cavalry Division and T-34s of the 85th Tank Brigade charged into the village and engaged the Germans in brutal hand-to-hand combat.
