Overview:

As North Korean forces swept southwards in June and into July, the majority of Korean Marine Corps units were occupied quelling a communist insurrection on Jeju-do, and island in the Korean Strait. It was not until late July that the main elements of the regiment were back on the mainland. On 01 August, Lieutenant Colonel Kim Seung Un of the KMC received orders from the regional ROK Commander, Major General Lee Ung Joon, to take his marines and block the road to Chindongni against approaching communist forces. If the enemy was allowed tp pass they would be poised to overrun the important supply bases and ports at Masan and Jinhae, home port to the KMC itself. Kim placed his 3rd and 7th Companies on the high ground overlooking the road to the town, and set a reconnaissance screen out in front of these units. On 03 August, the recon elements gave warning of the approaching KPA.
