Overview:

Leclerc’s tactics were to keep the Italians jumpy and he selected a fast motorized detachment to keep jabbing at them. The El Tag fort was bypassed on the east trying to outflank the Sahariana and attacking from the rear. Suddenly the Italian company appeared at 1200 meters, immobilized in a kind of large depression surrounded by rocky crest lines. The de Rennepont platoon had to fix the enemy while the Geoffroy platoon, with all weapons unloaded, tried to outflank the enemy in the east. However the Italian backfire grew more accurate and one after another French trucks soon began to burn. All maneuvers were stopped cold and the predicament of the French forces seemed desperate. Leclerc decided to then split his forces again and he sent out another flanking move, this time to the west, that eventually drove the Italians to withdraw in direction of the fort. A renewed French attack eventually sent them back to El Haouri, to the North West of Kufra, and forced them back on the defensive.
