Overview:
By mid-March 1945, Patton's 3rd Army was driving rapidly towards the Rhine River. After crossing the Moselle, the men of the 90th Infantry Division began the task of widening the American bridgehead and then moving to cross the Nabe River. German forces in the area began to concentrate in the Rhine-Moselle Triangle. The village of Pfaffenheck would soon be the center of the vortex of battle as the 90th Infantry wrestled the 6th SS Mountain Division for control. After being pushed out on the 15th, the American 357th Infantry Regiment and five tank destroyers of the 712th Tank Battalion organized a dawn counterattack on the 16th to reclaim the village. The SS Mountain troops were dug in an orchard south of Pfaffenheck with supporting assault guns.Attacker: American (3rd Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment and 712th Tank Battalion)
