Overview:
The American 1st Infantry Division was expanding its bridgehead east of the Wesser River and was advancing toward Osterode and the Harz Mountains. As part of this operation, the 2nd Battalion 18th Infantry Regiment was to occupy Dorste. Unbeknownst to the advancing American forces was that elements of SS-Ersatz Brigade Westfalen and one of the remaining two King Tigers of Major Fritz Schock' s Schwere-Panzer Abteilung 507 lay in ambush ahead of them. At 0700, the Sherman tanks of 2nd Platoon, B Company, 745th Tank Battalion were moving with F Company, 18th Infantry through the wooded area just east of Dorste when suddenly, the Tiger opened fire with its deadly 88mm gun. Soon, three Sherman tanks were ablaze and two more were knocked out but not burning. One Sherman fired from defilade, managing to score at least one hit on the Tiger only to watch it bounce off. Knowing it was just a matter of time before the Americans closed in for the kill, the Tiger's commander broke contact and withdrew to the east. Overcoming brief German resistance, 2nd Battalion continued its advance. In Osterode, Schwere-Panzer Abteilung 507 turned over its remaining two Tigers to SS-Ersatz Brigade Westfalen. Now, with one broken down in front of Gasthof zur Krone in Osterode, time for Abteilung 507's Tigers, had finally run out.Attacker: American (F Company, 2nd Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment and 2nd Platoon, B Company, 745th Tank Battalion, 1st Infantry Division)
