Overview:
Lo- cated on the southeastern tip of Papua, Milne Bay was selected as the location for an Allied base including three airstrips. However, in doing so the base became a target for the Japanese as a potentially valuable base of their own. On the night of August 25, 1942, some 2,000 Japanese Ma- rines of the 5th Kure SNLF landed to cap- ture the airfields but were dropped off 11 kilometers from their planned landing zone, and the fighting over the next few days telegraphed their intentions to the Allied commanders.Attacker: Japanese (5th Kure SNLF and 362nd Naval Pioneer Unit)
