Overview:

Under the codename Operation Ladbroke, the British 1st Airlanding Brigade was to capture the Ponte Grande bridge spanning the Anapo River in eastern Sicily to allow for a quick march on Syracuse by the 5th Infantry Division. 144 gliders set off from Kairouan but only 54 actually landed in Sicily; the rest got lost or were shot down. A reduced force attacked the bridge before midnight and captured it. They removed the demolitions and prepared for the inevitable counterattack. The Italians advanced with armored cars and infantry. . .
Attacker: Italian (Army and Marine elements from the Piazza Marittima Augusta-Siracusa and mortar team)
Defender: British (Elements of the 1st Borderers and 2nd South Staffords)

Errata (source)
The LMG counter shown in the British OB should be British — not Axis Minor. The British light mortar shown should be the standard (range 2-11) — not the Airborne version. [Corrected in subsequent printings of HOLLOW LEGIONS.]MMP

2022-03-04(A) Simon Staniforth vs British winWhat can you do as the Brits other than hunker in the foxholes and protect the pillbox, taking the best shots you can when presented with the opportunity. Just hung on with a GO HS and Leader left at the end and the Italians unable to get into the PB.
2022-03-02(A) Andy Bagley vs Matt Ellis Italian winA real slugfest, didn’t enjoy this scenario despite winning it. The British set up to protect the bridge, and may get the chance for some manoeuvre in Turn 1. After that, they are pretty much stuck in fixed positions while the Italians advance slowly (they have plenty of time) and inexorably forwards towards their objective. This is most likely to be through the woods, and offers little choice of strategy for the Italians.
There’s something of a challenge for the British in how they set up (particularly their mortars), but not much enjoyment to the scenario beyond that.
2019-04-20(D) Kevin Duval vs Dwayne Duval British winUsed British balance.
2019-04-20(A) Dwayne Duval vs Kevin Duval British win
2019-03-31(D) Shane Pask vs Italian winFine British training! Pillbox MG failed - fixed next turn, Stokes mortar crew broken by sniper - rallied next turn, Stokes mortar critical hit on Italian gun before it could even unlimber. Italians - 3 Heat of Battle rolls - 2 end up disrupted. Italian Tank main gun malfunction on first shot, disabled soon after. Still Italians made progress.
Italians made a mad dash for the pillbox turn 8. Tank made it to the bridge, but accompanying infantry broken. Truck turned into a burning wreck metres from the pillbox but smoke screened their final approach. Italians had enough to win CC on final turn and claim victory.
