Overview:
Marine offensive operation in the area near the Matanikau River were scaled back due to reports of a massive Japanese attack on the main Henderson Field defensive perimeter. A large supply of mortar shells had been transferred to the front for use during the postponed operations along the river and had been abandoned as the Marines pulled back to their staging areas. This ammunition had to be recovered before the Japanese stumbled upon it and used it against the Marines. A reinforced company set out to locate and retrieve the shell crates emblazoned with "U.S. Government Property".Attacker: American (USMC) (3rd Battalion, 5th Marines)
