Overview:
At the outset of the operation to seize the Viska River crossings, Osasto Lagus advanced to the outskirts of the village of Karhumäkeä before separating into three detachments to continue the advance. Tst. Osasto Hynninen was formed consisting of men from JP-3, a platoon from 1 Ps.P. (consisting of a T34, two T-28s' and a unit of T-26 tanks), some Pioneers (Finnish Pioneers were not combat engineers unlike other nationalities), and two attached 76mm Artillery pieces. Because of the freezing weather, the T-26 tanks would not start and the attack pushed off with only a T-34 commanded by a Corporal Heino, and two T-28s, supporting the attack. The Russians harassed the unit with mortar and machine-gun fire from a small ridge before Tst. Osasto Hynninen broke through the first trench and pillbox line. At 9:30 the first Russian line was crushed and the defenders fell back to Karhumäkea. At 10:25 the first units of Tst. Osasto Hynninen advanced upon the outskirts of Karhumäkeä.Attacker: Finnish (Osasto Hynninen and Ace Regiment)
