Overview:
The Allied invasion of Sicily, “Operation Husky,” was now in its fourth week. The Allied forces were advancing slowly –too slowly– due to the successful delaying actions by the Germans and their Italian allies. Along the northern coastline, in the vicinity of San Fratello, the German and Italian troops on Hill 673, San Fratello ridge, withstood several attacks from the advancing Allied forces. The surrounding terrain made it impossible to outflank the hill, so General Truscott, Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, ordered the obstacle to be bypassed by sea. A Task Force from the 30th Infantry Regiment, named after its commander, Lieutenant Colonel Lyle A. Bernard, was ordered to land in the enemy’s rear to block the coastal highway and seize the area of Monte Barbuzzo.Attacker: American (No more details)
