Overview:

The 7th Armored Division was advancing toward Soltau. The 5th Royal Tank Regiment moved to the north as recce vehicles from the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars reconnoitered the edge to Soltau. Just outside of town, a Panther opened fire and destroyed one of the Hussars’ scout cars. The Panther was subsequently destroyed as well. Further Hussar reconnaissance determined that Oberstleutnant Korner’s mixed battalion of the cavalry riding school, Volkssturm, and SS from the Hitlerjugend garrisoned Soltau along with some 88mm guns. The 155th Infantry Brigade was tasked with the assault on Soltau. The 7/8 Royal Scots mounted the decks of the Skins’ tanks and set off for Soltau along with Crocodile flamethrower tanks and Wasp flamethrower Carriers.

2020-07-21(A) Paul Works vs Dave Mareske British winBritish entered into the main German defensive line and ran immediately into an 88L. First shot by the 88 was a hit, no rate, but resulted in a dud. Two Wasps later (first shot from one burned out the vehicle's FT) and the 88's crew was broken. I did a bonehead CE move with my Cromwell VIII that resulted in the German sniper recalling it. The MA gun on both Crocodiles malfunctioned as well. Yeesh. At the end of Turn 1, it was not looking great for the Brits. On Turn 2, Dave's SS had a PSK shot and a PF shot (latter from a leader he had created in the Turn 1 CC phase...) at two of my tanks, but missed both. The German 9-2 and HMG were in the steeple, but throughout the game could not get a ROF tear going. By the end of Turn 2, the British had cleared the way to the woods-line. On turn 3, the remaining three FT vehicles started creating issues for the Germans, two broken squads - allowing the Brits to get into the village. One carrier swept around and dropped its HS off in one of the VC buildings. One Turn 4, the nasty 37L popped out to attempt to stop my other carrier from getting past into another VC building; my remaining WASP rolled up and KIAed that crew. Dave's setup was good, DRs hurt him in several key instances (e.g., no rate on the 88). Several keys foe the British: a) after Turn 1, I was able to keep the steeple hindered by smoke or WP, and b) the FT-armed vehicles are just nasty - especially the Wasps that are double-small, can zip around staying in motion, and cause major havoc.
