Overview:
After three days of naval and air preparation, the initial landings of February 19th for the most part were unopposed. The American strategists planned a five-day campaign. This notion was quickly squelched as Marines of the 4th and 5th Divisions mad their way of the soft black volcanic beach. Mine detection was impossible, not because of the ceramic mines employed by the Japanese, but because of the magnetic nature of the volcanic soil. The surface area of the first airfield, Mt. Surabachi, and the second airfield all came under American control at grievious cost. The next objective for the 4th Division would be the second main line of defense. Hill 382, the Turkey Knob, Miniami village, and the Amphitheater came to be known as The Meat Grinder.Attacker: American (USMC) (4th Marine Division)
