Overview:

As the Soviet offensive of 1944 swept through Belorussia, it soon reached the borders of Poland and the Baltic countries. On August 1, the 3rd Russian Mechanized corps of the 51st Army broke through the weakly held German defense lines between Aux and Mitau. The Russians quickly overcame the scattered German delaying units and reached the town of Tuckum, just a few kilometers away from the Gulf of Riga. There they met a counterattacking German emergency combat unit, SS Panzer Brigade Gross, consisting of two weak tank companies made up of old PzIII and IV tanks, the 103rd Heavy Tank Battalion (Tiger tanks) with panzergrenadier support plus the adhoc 1st SS Armored Recon battalion.

2024-12-11(A) Jeff B vs Andreas Reimer Russian win4.5 hrsI used my OBA to clear the area around X1, KIA a squad but leaving the building both intact and unscorched. Many shellholes now marked the area, and one of the grain hexes caught fire. I was quite concerned about the AT gun, so I didn't drive my tanks up too far and used my infantry to scout the way. They made it on or just pass the initial Russian setup area. No surprise 3/4 of his tanks parked themselves behind the wall, while the other (also no surprise) played guard on the center road. My Tiger flamed a T-34, but I had stupidly left my ACs CE in the rear, allowing his sniper to stun one and recall the other. My Panthers tried to save their butts with smoke the next turn, but only one found it. The one without lost its battle with the SU-85, while my remaining AC was flamed trying to make a break to join the infantry, who had continued to slowly move up and clear a path. I knew Turn 3 would be a rather static turn for me, as my infantry were getting bogged down in the narrow chokepoint near the road. I moved the remaining Panzer up to give them support on the road, and the Tiger backed up to try and take out the other T-34 behind the wall. After I greedily moved them up to try and DM a couple broken Russians, a stack of my infantry were blasted by the HMGB, killing a squad and breaking the rest. But all really went to hell on the bottom of the turn when my Tiger broke its MA, allowing the two Russian tanks behind the wall to roam free. The SU-85 flanked me and got a lucky CH to knock out the Tiger, and the T-34 did the same to the Panzer. I threw in the towel. Too bad too because it was shaping up to be an interesting game. In retrospect it should really be a no-brainer to place the OBA behind the wall to prevent the Russians easy access of parking behind it, and this is also the route of least resistance for the German infantry. Lesson learned the hard way.

2023-06-29(A) Øyvind Jacobsen Bjørkås vs MichaelA Russian winI had a great game of WCW7 Eye of the Tiger in the VASL League against Michael Hastrup-Leth, attacking as the Germans with German balance. Prinz Eugen rubbled two buildings so I had to take 5 of the remaining 8. The attack in the middle went well, but my right flank was stopped at the walls. A very brave fanatic 6-5-8 almost got over the road on the left flank, but got pinned by the last crucial shot. My lone surviving AFV (the tiger) burnt one T34 and killed another, leaving the vehicle crew to retake one Building in the last russian movement phase for the win. Tight, fun game, well chosen scenario by my opponent, and I had a great time. Well played Michael.
