Overview:

After the battle for the roadblock, the main effort of the Marines was spent patrolling, developing supply routes through the swamps, and extending the beachhead. The swamps along the Piva River hindered supply to the forward battalions. Indeed, only halftracks, and amphibians could traverse the supply route up the river. The route itself was not completely secure as combat and recon patrols resulted in frequent but minor clashes.
