Overview:

Many Axis soldiers in Arbuzov arose on a bitterly cold Christmas Day to discover that they had been abandoned. The main force had apparently continued on their retreat without rounding up all the soldiers in the column from their scattered nighttime resting places. The abandoned soldiers, about 1500 in number, mostly Italians, believed they were doomed and decided to sell their lives dearly. Soon they heard the sounds of approaching Soviet troops. . .

2024-10-10(A) Andy Goldin vs Eric Safran Russian winEric and I played at ASLOK 2024. I used the tank and a couple squads to attack from the north, my base of fire (the MMG and two squads) attacked by fire from the northeast, and the main effort attacked from the east, entering along the road in the center of the board. I used my HS to 'bump' into his dummies and discovered pickets at least a couple times. My northern and eastern pincers blasted the defenders, with attacking from both directions and aggressive actions all along the front enabling elimination of a few of his defenders through failure to rout.
My tank had a close call when I sent it ahead of the escorting Russian infantry but Eric's street fighting dice roll wasn't quite good enough. I managed to approach the remaining defenders in the western part of the village from all sides of the compass. Once they broke, it was over and Eric conceded.
Eric was a gentleman and a scholar, knowledgeable about the rules and gracious in play, win or lose, and I’d be happy to play with him again.
2024-03-30(A) Louis Langdeau vs CR Holmes Russian winCR deployed a nice set of speed bumps, successfully bluffing a street fight with two dummy stacks in the center, and then stacking a large set of Italians on his right. I pushed in with the Russians, trying to use the T60 mostly as a VBM freeze against a kill stack of Germans. Italians put up some truly heroic results in defense, and I think the game was CRs since he still had two Italian squads on his back left that could run back to J and successfully hold me up from clearing the area. Unfortunately, CR made a bit of an error and decided to hop into combat with the two instead in the hopes of clearing out a small squad of mine. I managed to survive the round, and then in the next turn piled in to pick up the last few groups thru surrender and CC.

Really fun scenario, and a great pick for a quick game. The Axis need to hold on by their fingernails against a vastly superior Russian force, and the Russians need to MOVE to make it happen on time.
2024-03-25(D) Mark Thompson vs Steve Lampon Russian winThe Russian attack quickly attrited hobbled Axis forces, ably used T-60 to OVR/FTR, and secured victory on their Player Turn 5. Due to WARR tournament rules, Russians received balance (extending game one full turn to 5 1/2 turns). This IMHO makes the game (short of ridiculous DR/luck) unwinable for the Axis. Note too that this version (AP18) gives only the Germans Winter Camo whereas the updated version A275 in Hollow Legions gives it to both the Italians and Germans. Latter is probably the better and more interesting version to play, as this gives the Italian units more mobility/survivability and therefore a bit more options to what in essence is a sit there and take it game for the Axis.
2022-08-21(D) Ken Rutkowski vs Bill Thomson Russian win
2022-06-04(D) Rich Weiley vs Steve Lessing Italian / German winHad the defending Axis in this one, after bidding for sides (missed out on getting the Soviets but exchanged the German 8-0 for a 8-1). Had some luck in this one. Sniper took out the Soviet 8-0 leader during the initial movement phase. I misplayed the German component by sticking around a turn too long to fire Prep fire on some squads sitting in the open which allowed them to be VBM freezed by the tank and swarmed in CC. However my now battle hardened 9-1 and squad managed to hold on for a couple of turns and taking advantage of sequential close combat, managed to eliminate 1.5 squads and the Soviet 9-1 before succumbing. With only one leader in play my opponent struggled to maintain the attack's momentum, particularly when a couple of his units got tied up in inconclusive melees. The surviving Italians and sole German halfsquad slowly retreated toward the board edge and I held on for the win.
2021-10-14(D) O Ramaille vs Macari Samuel Italian / German winWith a building ablaze on the East side of the town, the Russian approach was difficult despite the drifting smoke cover. The few Russian scouts were met with deadly accurate Italian shots. The Russian tankette entered from the South and tried to flank the enemy without much success. It was eventually destroyed trying to freeze the Italian LMG squad. Gusts made the smoke disappear at a critical moment letting the Russians without cover. The Russians captured two squads but the defense was still strong in the center of the town. With too much routed units and still too many good order Italian and German squads, the Russian resigned.
2021-09-12(A) Jacob Elmqvist vs Asad Rustum Russian winThe Russian won the day on the last turn. Two CC was the deciding factors.

2020-11-01(D) Paul Works vs Doug Leach Italian / German winSioux City Street Fighting Tournament; round one. Doug had a good attack with one platoon coming in toward the south-east clump of buildings, one platoon from the north with the tank, and his main force coming in directly from the east. His SE force got shot up moving to assault the buildings on the east side of the street and posed no further problem. His northern force shoved through my weak screen and into the north side of the village. His main force started off well, but got held up on the north-east side of the central crossroad. The Russians were able to break my stacks (and ELR many Italians), but I was very hot on my rally rolls; I rolled numerous "3s" and "4s" to rally Italian and German DM brokies (and even a "2" to battle harden an Italian squad!). My wounded 9-2 got a sequence of two low DRs to smash up a stack of Russians on Turn 3. The Russian Prep Fire on Turn 4 did nothing to my troops and by the end of the German Player Turn, I still had Good Order troops in five of the buildings on the south-west corner of the crossroad - the Russians had four broken MMC in addition to their losses of four full squads. Doug conceded at this point. This is a enjoyable, and stressful, little scenario!
2020-10-27(A) Dave Mareske vs Wynn Policky Russian winWe had a great game in the Sioux City Street Fighting Tournament. It came down to the last CC roll. Having one of the German walking wounded squads go Berserk in the final German turn made it tough on the Germans. The Russians had to muscle through 8 "12s"...many of them in CC allowing the Axis to escape and fight on. By the end the Russians had lost half their force, had to crash their tank into a building to overrun and break a squad one of the final squads and then gang up on the Berserk squad, narrowly eliminating it in CC.

2020-10-02(A) Dave Mareske vs Dennis Dowd Russian winRussians pressed the defenders throughout the game getting some good breaks in CC.
2020-07-09(A) patrick palma vs John McLoughlin Russian win
2020-07-07(D) davide galloni vs Andrea Manzoli Italian / German winA dramatical situation for the axis troupes that must stay concealed and repaired from the russian advance. They come from east but Italians remain concealed without stacking so the soviet must search my mmc and lose time. A lot of CC that require a bit of lucky but at the end a great satisfaction for historical simulation of the battle.

2020-06-10(D) Richard Webb vs Santiago Spenabella Russian winRussian chose to attack parralel tp the diagonal road, coming on from north and south. This limited defensive fire largely to the "end" building on each flank. AFV was largely unstoppable, and used this to VBM freeze a hex each turn. Disaterous Axis die rolling on GT 4 killed off any chance of a win, with the final 2-4-7 hiding out the way near j1 overrun on GT 5 to complete a fairly emphatic Russian win.
2020-05-24(A) Dave Mareske vs Dan Best Russian winMoved fast with the Russians and lots of Close Combat wins helped secure a Russian victory. One of the highlights was my tank crashing into the last building with a German half Squad and did not BOG! German highlight was routing out of encirclement, rolling a "2" for interdiction, and thus created a Hero and rallied. However, they all died in Close Combat in the end. Great game with Dan Best!
2020-03-11(D) James Lowry vs Patch Bunny Italian / German win
2020-02-10(D) Eben Johnson vs Italian / German winGreat game. Played Italians/Germans; bad setup against AFV and could not stop Russians entering from the east; later game rolls went my way and game ended first half Russian 4.
2019-10-11(A) Andy Goldin vs Phillipe Briaux Italian / German winAs the Russian player, I was too aggressive in closing with the enemy and took losses on -1 and -2 shots due to unexpected LOS sightings on account of the board configuration -- the angle of the road on the map created unexpected (to me) open shots. I positioned the MMG well in the center of the board and make nice use of the tankette to get behind the Axis player to set up encirclement and FTR situations but ran out of time and men to clear the village. Doesn't seem like much fun for the Axis player, as he's got to spend most of the game just taking it.
