Overview:
Operation Queen was the codename for the assault into the Roer River plain. The American XIX Corps was to cross the Roer and drive towards the Rhine. Most of the terrain was flat and dotted with villages and cultivated fields. The tankers of the 2nd Armored Division were concerned with the soggy soil conditions. For their part, the Germans had established a defensive pattern with the villages as integral parts of concentric arcs fanning outward from the major towns like ripples in a pond. The 2nd Armored Division had divided their attack into three Task Forces, each with a different objective and avenue of approach. Task Force 2 attacked in the center zone. Moving slowly in second gear because of the soggy ground, the tanks were unopposed until they reached a point about 500 yards from Apweiler. Then, undetected anti-tank guns opened up, having hidden in the orchards and fringe woods around the village.Attacker: American (CCB 2nd Armored Division)
Defender: German (176th Infantry Division)

2025-01-29 | (A) Justin DiSabatino | vs | American win | The Germans set up further back on board u in an effort to force the Americans to cross open ground. The Americans sent a force up north of infantry with one AFV while two AFVs followed the road in from vB5 and the remainder of the Americans moved in over the southern hill. Limited AFV movement meant the time crunch was felt in order to reach the exit. The Germans managed to knock out two AFVs and delay the American infantry, but as the German forces broke, it was harder and harder to slow the Americans. Smoke was key in allowing the AFVs to make it around the German guns. It still came down to a PF attempt on the last turn, but the shot missed and the final AFV made it off the board. | |||
