Overview:

The Soviets launched an offensive into Manchuria on 9 August 1945. The operation was very successful and penetrated deep into Japanese lines, making it difficult for them to re-establish defensive positions. The Soviets broke through most defenses by 12 August and surrounded Japanese groupings. The Japanese 124th Infantry Division was ordered to provide rearguard to slow the Soviet advance in order to allow other forces to form a new defensive line. The Soviet 65th Rifle Corps put significant pressure on the Japanese 272nd Regiment over the next couple of days, forcing its remnants to the base of Mount Shozu.
