Overview:

When Red Army elements crossed the Don River in early February just west of Rostov and established a bridgehead, the 503rd Heavy Tank Battalion was part of the force tasked to eliminate the threat. A force of six Tigers and then Pz IIIs, with panzergrenadiers riding on them, set out from the southwestern edge of Rostov on an icy morning, moving toward the riverside village of Nishne-Grilovskaya which was held by elements of the Russian 44th Army. The German objectives were to clear the area north of the railroad embankment and the village, then link up with Kampfgruppe Sander of the 23rd Panzer Division further west.
Attacker: German (Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 503 and Panzergrenadier-Regiment 126)

2024-02-04(A) Vic Lauterbach vs JM German winComplex SSRs and VC make this scenario best suited to VASL. (We didn't add RR overlays, but you could.) The German GT2 force entering east of 3aI1 struck us both as odd as it renders the anti-tank ditch useless. I drew the Germans who get a force quite capable of winning this in 8 turns, but the 48 CVP cap is tough. You rack up points fast losing AFVs. My attack drove at the 3aL7 VC area and along the RR fairly quickly. Jim's defense was a screen east of building D8 and J9. The Russians are spread thin, and 88L fire proved effective against MMC in stone buildings. At the end of turn 6, I'd won fights for building L7 and factory D8, but lost 43 CVP. After the next RPh, Jim suggested I check the VC. It turned out that I had the win. Jim: High MC and rally DRs doomed my defense. Failing to rally a DM 447 in 3aK9 cost me the game. My crews held tough, but they don't count for VC condition c. I needed to kill one more PzIIIN to get the cap but missed the 57LL shot in 3aO12. This one looks better than it plays. The defender does not have any clever tactical options that I could see.
2022-10-06(D) Michael Rodgers vs Al Saltzman German winWhat a super dull game for my Russians. Fire to little or no effect. Skulk on my turn. Repeat. The German attack was methodical, going for the end-game VC.
