Overview:

As part of the three-pronged attack against Japanese positions on the western bank of the Matanikau River, the 1st Raider Battalion was to cross the river at a small footbridge. At the same time, elements of the 5th Marines would attack at the river's mouth, tying down the Japanese forces. Finally, half of Chesty Puller's 1st Battalion of the 7th Marines would be landed west of the Matanikau to encircle the defenders. All of these actions hinged on the Raiders crossing the Matanikau and attacking from the west bank of the river., but none of the Marine planners knew the Japanese had crossed to the east bank of the river.

2022-10-18(A) Jeff B vs Joe Arthur American (USMC) win2 hrsThe Japanese plan should be to strongly protect the western shoreline and block the American infiltration with bodies. They should try to keep the Americans out of P14-R14 at all costs, as these are the only hexes that can interdict a Japanese crossing of the river, and they should at least try to get their MGs to the other side. The mortars would be nice as well, but this is a luxury I feel they can ill-afford as these are needed to prevent the American's setting up too comfortably in the above hexes. Things started out a bit rough for the Americans when a HS was mowed down and a 8-0 eliminated for FTR, but these were acceptable losses in probing and trying to crack the Japanese front line of defense. It didn't help the defense any that the Americans generated two heroes on the first turn. Japanese shooting was actually quite stellar, but when these are mostly on 1+0/2+0 shots vs. 8ML it hardly mattered. What did matter were their atrocious MC rolls. Joe did setup the requisite wall of bodies, but made a crucial mistake in trying to extricate everybody rather then a select few, as the wall of bodies defense needs to be maintained throughout. This extraction proved a bit costly, losing a 448 to a KIA (breaking their mortar in the process), an 8-0 to boxcars, and two squads pinning to be decimated the next turn by the American kill stack. With only a single Japanese squad left behind, the Americans were able to charge forward and position themselves along the woodsline. By the end of Turn 2 the Japanese were down to 3HS, a striped squad, and their crew. Faced with having to use these troops to line their side of the river with bodies and stand up to an inordinate amount of American firepower, the Japanese wisely decided to throw up the white flag.
