Overview:

Two things were becoming clear by mid-morning of 8 July. The first was that Soviet counterattacks were uncoordinated and mostly unsuccessful in spite of the voluminous artillery support. The second was that the attacks would continue due to 13th Army Commander Lt. General Nikolai Pukhov's seemingly limitless supply of men and ammunition. With all the Ferdinands down for a "recovery day" and grinding through mine-filled farm fields far too slow a process for his tastes, Generaloberst Walter Model reasoned that the best way to capture Ponyri quickly was with a quick assault on the town itself. Oberst Hans Hahne's Grenadier-Regiment 507 was ordered into the breach once more.
