Overview:

The US Eighth Army was tasked with clearing the Central Philippines. The island of Negros was the next to fall to the mighty American military juggernaut. The 40th Division would spearhead the assault. Key to the success of a quick and decisive attack was the capture of a road bridge over the Bago River. Old Bago Bridge is a steel span of 650 feet long and 40 feet above the water, traversing the wide river of Bago between the Poblacion and the Bago Ma-ao crossing. A platoon of infantry landed in the darkness four hours ahead of the main force and headed inland. An Allied agent met the GIs on the way to the bridge and warned that a Japanese squad and some oxen-drawn carts were heading for the bridge. The Americans resolved to get there first.
