Overview:

After the fall of Fallujah and the defeat of the strong Iraqi counterattack there, the British prepared to take the fight to Baghdad. However, several full-strength units of the Iraqi Army still threatened the flanks of the modest British Army forces. Land and air patrols were dispatched from Habbaniya to all points of the compass to find the renegade Iraqi Army. A large number of Iraqi soldiers were discovered near Ramadi. A truck-borne squadron of the Household Cavalry Regiment was positioned west of the town to block any Iraqi attempt to escape into the wastes of Al-Anbar province. At dawn on the 24th, the Tommies of B Squadron suddenly fell under attack by a strong force of local raiders.
