Overview:
While the Germans stretched their reach to Voronezh, Stalin ordered the newly formed 5th Tank Army into battle. Ordered to attack the German flank west of Voronezh, Rotmistrov’s 7th Tank Corps, with almost 150 tanks, could not even manage to coordinate all three of its brigades, let alone coordinate with the two other tank corps that were supposed to attack in conjunction with it. Despite this hobbling of the Soviet attack, Rotmistrov's 7th Tank Corps caught the 11th Panzer flat footed outside of the small Russian town of Krasnaia Poliana. The 11th quickly withdrew its advanced force to concentrate to the south. Knowing the German air force would concentrate on any attacking force, Rotmistrov ordered his tanked to close with the German forces and follow then as closely as possible so the Stukas could not distinguish friend from foe.Attacker: Russian (62nd & 87th Tank Brigades, 7th Tank Corps)
