Overview:
Luftlande-Sturm-Regiment 1 did not participate in the opening stages of the invasions of Greece and Yugoslavia. Instead, it was kept in reserve until called into action for the invasion of Crete. The unit’s 1st Battalion was landed by DFS 230 gliders, towed in behind Ju 52s of Luftlanddegeschwader 1. The remainder of the regiment was parachuted in the vicinity of Maleme airfield on 20 May 1941 and had the unfortunate fate of landing in the midst of the New Zealand 5th Infantry Brigade. A pitched battle ensued, as the Regiment grabbed Hill 107, overlooking the airfield in the south. The Germans reinforced this meager success with air support and paratroopers from Fallschirmjager Regiment 2, and despite continued shelling and resistance, Junkers were able to begin landing, disgorging 650 mountain-troopers to continue the conquest of Crete.Attacker: German (Elements I & III/Luftlande Sturm Regiment & 2nd Fallschirmjaeger Regiment)
