Overview:
The 1st SS Panzer Division was advancing toward Kharkov. Sturmbannfuhrer Jochen Peiper's 3rd Panzergrenadier Battalion was leading the assault. Their first objective was the village of Peressel. At 1145, the grenadiers attacked mounted in their SPWs and on Sturmgeschutze across fields covered in deep snow. Russian infantry and supported by tanks and mortars put up a spirited defense.
