Overview:

The German invasion of Crete began on 20 May 1941, and was the first large-scale airborne operation in history. Fallshirmjäger jumped into battle or landed by gliders near their targets. However, the Allied defenders of Crete made the German attackers pay for those daring tactics. But they accomplished their various missions, capturing key objectives such as airfields so that reinforcements could be flown in. In the following days more troops landed on Crete, including Gebirgsjäger-Division 5, which specialized in mountain warfare. They were sent immediately into combat. The town of Galatas had to be taken, but New Zealand troops set up a prepared defense and awaited the attack. Supported by Stuka dive bombers and mortar fire, the soldiers of Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 100 attacked over hilly terrain still strewn with the corpses of fallen Fallschirmjäger from previous days’ battles.

2017-07-09(A) Jeff B vs John Fedoriw Greek / New Zealand win6 hrsThe Germans have a lot of ground to cover in a very short time. Even if they haul ass they will have a rough go with all the olive groves, walls, and hedges in between them and their objective. Unless they are very lucky with their Stukas, the Kiwis will certainly be able to shore up the village in force just before they even have a chance to make it to the fringe. If the reinforcements entered just one turn later I think they might stand a chance. As it is they have virtually none without some divine intervention in the cheesy mad dash culmination this scenario invariably invites.

2017-03-11(A) Jason Wert vs Paul Schaeffer Greek / New Zealand winReally nice setup by Paul that placed the NZ defenses almost all on the German left. The Germans sent everything at that and led to a bloodbath on the hill. Tough sledding meant very little left to push into the village and it was over by Start of 6. Stukas bagged one tank on MG shot, other was ineffective.
