Overview:

The 21st Infantry Division’s mission was to destroy Polish forces north of Graudenz, and then seize the city along with the bridges over the Vistula River. This was a very bold mission, as the objectives lay 12 miles away, and they would have to conduct a gap crossing over the Ossa River. The Germans initially made progress for several miles, and then were completely blocked by the Polish 16th Infantry Division. The Germans’ now tenuous bridgehead over the Ossa River was hammered by artillery and machinegun fire. Inexplicably, Polish forces were ordered to change positions. Colonel Stanislaw Switalski lost control of the situation, and ordered his 16th Infantry to withdraw which turned into panic among the troops. The Polish 16th Infantry regrouped after their blundered defensive switch and along with militia forces established a defense in the city, but it was too late. The Germans were able to exploit the situation. Elements of Infantry Regiment 3 captured the high ground east of the city, and then maneuvered southwest to the Vistula, effectively encircling Graudenz. Infantry Regiment 45 made a direct attack into the north part of the city, but quickly became bogged down in house to house fighting in the suburbs.

2023-03-18(D) Craig Renier vs Steve Boro Polish winThe Germans cautiously pushed up the center of the battlefield with small flanking forces on the right and left. The Poles were able to prevent a quick advance with the threat of two fire lanes. The Germans crawled forward through the trees to close the distance and bring superior firepower to bear. The Polish forces began to withdraw to a second line of defense but found themselves pinned before reaching most of their desired positions. The Polish HMG Fire Lane continued to hold back the tide on the Polish right, but advances on the left put the defenders in an untenable position. By the end of German Turn 4, the Poles had lost 8 1/2 squads to 1/2 German squad. In addition. the Germans had advanced to the last road they needed to cross to reach the victory buildings. The Polish reinforcements rushed to the front. Two MMGs were able to reach a position enabling them to cover both roads with potential Fire Lanes discouraging the an aggressive German advance. The Germans pressed the attack, but were cautious on the Polish right. The Germans adjusted their forces in preparation for a final push. The Poles were fortunate in pinning a small German stack on a low odds shot, which stymied the German plan. The Poles continued their careful withdrawal giving up their first Victory building. The Germans needed two turns to take the 2nd building with the Poles using the upper floor and fortunate CC die rolls holding off the attackers. The Polish losses were telling, though as they fell back to the final two buildings, hoping they could withstand the rain of bullets from two killer stacks. The Poles had one last hope with their Flamethrower held in concealment out of LOS. On the final turn, the Germans stormed the 3rd building and seemed destined to take it when the Polish flamethrower belched its terrible destruction, breaking the only German units that could move upstairs in a bid to force the last of the defenders out. In the end. the Poles held onto one building with a lone leader while the other building was held by a leader, one good order MMC and two broken MMCs.
2022-04-05(D) Simon Staniforth vs Polish winI didn’t put too much up front and fell back into the victory buildings as I awaited the reinforcements. They were able to get on unmolested and the defence coalesced around a couple of the victory buildings which the Poles were able to hold. Key moment of the game the Polish FT unconceals in the penultimate turn, rolling Snakes Eyes to KIA a squad / leader and break a couple more squads / another leader leaving the Germans short of troops and they concede at the start of T7
2021-09-01(D) Andy Bagley vs Tony Gibson German winI played this a few years ago and won easily with the Germans, so was nervous about taking the Poles this time. In the event though it couldn't have been closer: in the game's very last CC Phase I needed a DR of 6 to win, and rolled a 7! I reckon that if the Poles can stop the Germans crossing the road on board DW-1a by turn 4 without taking too many losses, they should win. As it was, a couple of good German rolls meant I didn't achieve this, although I then had some better luck with my counterattack (the berserk conscript HS with a FT was interesting!), only to fail at the last hurdle. Some mistakes by both sides here, but a really very good scenario.
2021-09-01(A) Chuck Dye vs DD Polish win
2021-06-20(D) Paul Works vs James Ferrell Polish winI positioned multiple criss-crossing fire zones to interdict the Germans' movements. My defense was enabled by James' troops not being able to make MCs for the first half of the game, slowing him down greatly. My reinforcements got into the VC buildings and the Germans ran out of steam. James is a great opponent and really fun to play.
