In March 1937 the Nationalist forces invaded the sector of Guadalajara in order to envelop Madrid from the north-west. The Italian Volunteer Troops Corps sent by Mussolini to help Franco take part in this attack. The Italians clashed here for the first time against their compatriots: the volunteers of the Garibaldi Battalion of the 12th International Brigade. The hardest clash took place for possession of the Palacio de Ibarra which dominated the connecting road Trijueque Brihuega. The Garibaldi had lost it during the battles of the 11th and now, under the command of Vadali, Longo and Nenni, they were preparing with the help the tanks of General Pavlov to try to reconquer them.
