Overview:
Colonel Aleksander Krzyzanowski was the pragmatic commander of the Armia Krajowa (AK or Home Army) in the region of Vilnius (modern Wilno). This region was claimed by Lithuania and Poland as part of pre-1939 Poland. The AK in this region got a slow start and immediately developed a bitter conflict with the Soviet Partisans. The Soviets were under orders from Moscow to attack the AK and attacked many Polish villages in the region. In 1943 Colonel Krzyzanowski negotiated a ceasefire with the Germans in order to deal with the Soviet threat to Poles in the region. By early 1944 the Soviets and Poles had a deal, no more Soviet mistreatment of Polish civilians and a united fight against the Germans. The first target was the newly raised Lithuanian volunteer defense battalions, LVR by Lithuanian acronym. The Germans had ordered the LVR on anti-Partisan operations and the LVR had targeted Polish villages and civilians. The Germans were in the process of subordinating the LVR to the Nazi Party by making the member swear an oath to Hitler. Instead the LVR commander ordered the troops back to the garrison in several fortified Lithuanian villages. The AK decided to attack and eliminate the 301st LVR battalion garrisoned in the fortified village of Murowana Oszmianka.Attacker: Partisan (Vilnius Region AK (Partisans))
Defender: Lithuanian (301st LVR Battalion)
