Overview:
As Operation Barbarossa reached the one month mark, the men of the Grossdeutschland Regiment were holding positions along the Smolensk-Roslaval Railway at Vas’kovo just to the west of Voroshilovo. Under the command of Oberleutnant Karl Haenert, the grenadiers and machine gun sections of 2nd Company were in well concealed dug in positions. As the day began, Russian artillery pounded the German positions. Then as the artillery fire began to lift, the Germans could see masses of Russian infantry, moving directly towards their positions. These were men of the 145th Rifle Division. With Soviet Commissars providing encouragement, the brown wave rolled towards Haenert’s Line.Attacker: Russian (Elements of 729th Rifle Regiment, 145th Rifle Division)
