Overview:
The rebel campaign for control of the north was as fierce as any place else in those opening months of the war. Franco was determined to consolidate his hold on the north and sever all foreign aid for the loyalist regime by cutting the supply path to France by controlling Guipuzcoa. On August 26th, the Nationalists had captured the first defense line on Erlaiz and Puntza Ridge, but encountered serious opposition in fromn of the convent of San Marcial. The first of several defeats for the Nationalists followed. Day after day, the Nationalists pounded the Northern Basque defenses with artillery, from which the Republicans withdrew, only to face fierce counter-attacks in which the trenches would be retaken in hand-to-hand attacks. Always on the flank was the dominant convent and its deadly fire below.Attacker: Nationalist (3rd Navarrese Battalion)
