Overview:

In the wake of the Battle for Moscow, the opportunity presented itself to encircle and destroy Army Group Center. At the end of January, the 1st Guards Cavalry broke through the German lines and threatened to seize vital transportation and logistic lines that were crucial for sustaining the Army Group over the winter. In order to facilitate the breakthrough, the Soviets planned to drop the 4th Airborne Division directly on the lines and make links with the Cavalry later. However, due to a shortage of aircraft and fighter cover on the first night, only the 8th Airborne Brigade was dropped.
