Overview:

"Wandering Cauldron" - On August 3, 1943, the Voronezh Front, which included two tank armies, began the Rumyantsev offensive in the Kharkov and Belgorod sector. The surprise was total among the Germans who thought the adversary had been decimated and exhausted by Operation Zitadelle. That same evening, the 5th Guards Tank Army had already advanced 25 km. The Soviet advance threatened the town of Tomarovka occupied by the Panzer-Abteilung 52 which included the Panthers having survived Zitadelle, most of them out of service. Major von Sivers could deploy a few immobile machines around the locality but only 27 of his 136 tanks were really available. Threatened with encirclement, the unit left Tomarovka on the 5th after having scuttled 72 Panthers. It formed the core of a Wandering Cauldron.
