Overview:

In late 1944, the Australian Army had assumed responsibility for Allied operations on Bougainville, replacing US troops who were subsequently redeployed to the Philippines. Following the failed landing by the Australians at Porton Plantation, the commander of the Australian II Corps, Lieutenant-General Stanley Savige, decided to focus the main effort of the Australian campaign upon driving south towards the Japanese garrison at Buin, where the bulk of the Japanese forces were holding out.

2023-01-06(D) Dan Best vs Kermit Mullins Japanese win
2023-01-06(A) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best Japanese winWell...that wasn't too much fun. Nothing being funneled into a fortified Japanese position. As one would expect, My Australians were getting wasted by Turn 3 as they attempted to get to and across the stream. After watching the Japanese HMG rate my boys to death, I threw in the towel and conceded. Just wasn't interested in watching my boys get slaughtered when there very little chance they would actually get on to the last hill hexes. Too much wire, too many trenches and bunkers and Matildas...that are this side of worthless. Additionally, the terrain is so bad, that the Australians have very few opportunities to use their firepower to soften up the Japanese. Dan's defense was excellent and coupled with the terrain made this a losing proposition for the Australians from the start.
2022-12-08(A) Indy Lagu vs Rob Oler Japanese winAs usual, Rob's defense was excellent, and I blundered into
a couple of traps he set for me.

In the end, it ended up being very close, but not close. I needed
to capture 15 level 2 hexes. I took 14. Horseshoes and hand grenades
and all that. I mistook a pillbox hex for level 2, and therefore my last
turn was badly thought out.

The terrain is PTO and thus rather restrictive. The board felt
about 3 hexes wide at times.

I'm not a fan of fortification-heavy scenarios. This one has 9 trenches,
6 wire, and 3 pillboxes. It felt as though the IJA had little to do but fire.
As is usual for a Lone Canuck offering, there were lotsa SW. I had 3 PIATS,
and only took one shot.

Rob likes the planning that a defender needs in a scenario such as this;
I simply can't be bothered.

I'd play this again, but only as the attacker. Having said that,
I prefer actions that are more fluid.
