Overview:
Operation Munchen was to be the general Romanian-German summer offensive for 1941. It was to take place on the Prut River Line, with the goal of retaking Romanian territory that had fallen into Soviet hands in both Bukovina and Bessarabia during 1940. The 3rd Romanian Army was tasked with occupying Northern Bukovina and creating a bridgehead over the Prut River. This was preparatory to the scheduled attack on the Dnister River, which was to begin in mid-July. The 3rd Army had the immediate mission of clearing all Russian resistance in the nearby villages on the west bank of the river and to cut off their avenues of retreat. The progress towards the old 1940 frontier was slowed by the presence of the Soviet 2nd Mechanized Corps. The Soviets had dispatched the 2nd Mechanized Corps to the area to support the sparse defenses already present in the area and to slow the Axis advance.Attacker: Romanian (Brigada 5 Cavalerie)
