Overview:
The Americans were closing the ring around the city and, in a desperate attempt to widen the gap between the two American pincers, the Germans repeatedly counterattacked the 1st Infantry Division following Colonel Gerhard Wilck's motto: "the best defence is a good offense". Despite several local successes, the bulk of the German forces were being destroyed by artillery and air support.
