Overview:

Lt. Gen. Yamashita Tatsuyuki's "driving charge" to Singapore paused after 25th Army captured Kuala Lumpur in just five weeks. In the bried respite, Malaya Command GOC Arthur Percival gave Maj. Gen. H. Gordon Bennett, of the eager but untested Australian 8th Division, charge of western Johore. Bennett deployed Westforce for mobile defense behind the Muar River. When the Japanese attack resumed, Imperial Guards Division launched its 4th and 5th Regiments across the river, shattering two battalions of 45th Indian Brigade. Westforce HQ did not grasp the assault's scale, so Bennett sent only Australian 2/29 Battalion and a troop of the 4th Antitank Regiment to Bakri for a counterattack with 45th Brigade's reserve.

2023-04-21(D) Andy Bagley vs Gordon Jupp Commonwealth winAn interesting "semi-PTO" scenario where the (radio-less) Japanese tanks are almost forced to stick close to the single road. They could try running the gauntlet of AT fire for an early exit and extra VPs, but it's probably more sensible, as my opponent did, to find ways of helping the Japanese infantry (e.g. by cutting rout paths). Light woods hinder but don't block LOS, so the Commonwealth infantry can't hide and multiple banzais are inevitable, and it's then a matter of how many casualties both sides take. This felt to me like a close game, and I had very little left by the end, but I had the better of the dice luck - in particular the Japanese struggled to pass MCs - so by the end of turn 6 the Japanese simply didn't have enough forces able to exit to satisfy their VCs.

In the end he was just two EVP short of victory - the value of the tank that failed its independent move TC on the last turn. All I had left was a leader, a hero, and two squad-equivalents.

This was my first time playing Pooch. We had a blast playing this late night round where according to Pooch, my hot dice single handily wrecked his weekend ;)

The scenario has some interesting features. PTO is in effect, except it's not. Palm trees are Light Woods, there is a paved road, Grain is Brush. The Japanese are basically under early Russian war doctrine as their vehicles must move first and Armored Assault is NA. They also get a one time night infiltration placed by random selection from the snipper counter which was pretty cool. In our playing, both of my 40L guns malfunctioned on their first shots and didn't play a role in the game. However, my ATRs were devastating. Pooch managed to skillfully get off about half of what he needed with the other half breaking or pinning on the last turn, making the outcome uncertain until the very end. A good scenario and a fun opponent.
