Overview:

goal of the sweeping Japan ese "Southern Offensive" was the capture of the rich oil and rubber resources of the Netherlands East Indies. By swift and expert exploitation of these raw materials, vital to their war effort, the Japanese government hoped to be able to withstand the inevitable retaliation of the angry Americans and British. Because the great strug gle in China demanded such extensive forces, the seizure of these strategic islands was to be undertaken by the limited uncommitted Army troops and the Imperial Navy. Initial military planning even found a use for the small airborne contingents that had been languishing since their creation. A week before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the two battalions of Japanese naval paratroops-Yokosuka I and Yoko suka 3 Special Naval Landing Forces-were dispatched to Formosa, whence Yoko suka I proceeded to Davao preparatory for its mission, a combat drop in support of the planned landings on Dutch Celebes. As usual, the Japanese sought to quickly secure airfields for their own use, a key component in their rapid march of victory through the islands. At dawn on 11 January, converted Nell bombers flew low over the Menado airfield in five-plane V-formations. Escorted by Zeros, these ad hoc transports dropped two parachute rifle companies on the colonial defenders from altitudes between 900 and I 000 feet. As their fighters strafed ground targets at will, the airborne Samurai landed in a relatively compact body.

2025-02-23(D) Dave B vs Joseph L DiCamillo Dutch win2.25 hrsIt almost took longer to resolve the paradrop than it did to play out the rest of the scenario. Joe's Japanese drifted all over the place, but many drifted near the Dutch entrenchments around the airstrip, leading to some devastating First Fire at -2 for Haz Mo. Two Japanese leaders were wounded, along with a couple of squads KIA before they could even get their 'chutes stowed. A majority of the remaining Japanese squads split on their landing task checks, leaving Joe with a fairly widely dispersed swarm of gnats to attempt to clear the airfield. The Japanese FB managed to break an entire killer stack posted in the woods to the west of the airfield, and those guys never got back into the game, as he was able to maneuver his paratroops near them to keep them DM'ed and on the run. FB point attackes on the subsequent two turns yielded less than spectacular results, just a few pins. Meanwhile the entrenched colonials around the strip got off a number of lucky shots, killing another leader, and striping the only few remaining whole squads. Joe failed his personal morale check, concluded the scenario was not winnable, and conceded early. I thought he should have tried a few more turns of FB strafe/point attacks to attempt to break or kill the majority of my force and then swarm in for the final kills, probably with Banzai attacks.

2024-11-17(A) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best Japanese win3.33 hrsTough scenario for both sides. My Japanese had one stick land on the runway, but they all survived and took on the defenders as the other sticks assembled and moved into assault positions. The Japanese dominated in close combat and by Turn 6 had cleared the runway and stopped the final counterattack for the win.
2024-10-14(D) David Garvin vs Andrew Luden Japanese winWhat a great game to play on Canadian Thanksgiving. What's better than a Japanese parachute landing on the Dutch in 1942?
This game saw it all: Banzai attacks, a broken Dutch 1st Line HS suffering Heat of Battle, and ending up battle hardening *and* creating a hero! And later, in close combat, same HS creates a leader! 2 x SMC from 1 HS!

In the end, Andrew masterfully maneuvered his way up (all without the help of his Fighter Bomber: they never showed up!). In the end, a few key Banzai assaults took me down. I started off strong, though, my AA fire took out one of his leaders, a 9-1.

Great fun, and we used the LFT maps: No more trying to remember what was what.
