Overview:

In support of Operation CLIPPER, XXX Corps wanted one more push to take the villages that were beyond Geilenkirchen. The green 405th Infantry from the 102nd "Ozark" Division was released from reserve for this attack on Thanksgiving Day. Since the defending Volksgrenadiers had largely been replaced by the experienced 9th Panzer and 10th SS Panzer Divisions, the American command knew that the German defense would be more difficult than the initial Geilenkirchen battles.Although slowed by mud, the Ozarks made good initial progress across the open ground. But when some units took a small hill east of Beeck, machine guns and light flak pinned them down. The assault from the south supported by British tanks bogged down too, due not just to mud, but by panzers and assault guns as well. With the Ozarks stalled , the Germans then launched a counterattack which included heavy tanks.
Attacker: American/British ((American) 405th Infantry Regiment, 102nd "Ozark" Infantry Division and (British) Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry)
Defender: German/German (SS) (183rd Volksgrenadier Division, 9th Panzer Division and 22nd SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment, 10th SS Panzer Division "Frundsberg" with Schwere Panzer Kompanie Hummel and Panzer Regiment 33, Panzer Division 9)

2024-12-12(A) Jim Thompson vs Fabio Mazzuchelli German/German (SS) win
2024-12-09(A) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best German/German (SS) win2 hrsGoofy scenario with mud...which always sucks. Setup is also a bit screwy. Overall, the Americans really stand little chance of winning this one. I gambled with an upfront attack and rolled very poorly. My Firefly and two Shermans were knocked out by Turn 2 and the remaining tank at the end of Turn 2. I managed to take 9 victory locations, but had no chance of getting any more or even holding the ones I had once the SS and heavy Panzer arrived. Threw in the towel at the end of three as defeat was a foregone conclusion. 6 Morale Americans attacking 8 morale Germans in stone buildings with lousy tanks...not a recipe for success.
