Overview:
The battles for the Colmar Pocket were approaching an end. After Allied reversals in December, Untermehmen Wacht am Rhein and Untermehmen Nordwind, SHAEF finally decided to provide Jean de Latte de Tassigny's First Army with US formations-air, artillery, and especially combat troops-to eliminate the thorn in Eisenhower's side. Operation CHEERFUL, starting on January 20th into a driving snowstorm, would be launched with the 1st French Corps from the south (on the 20th) and the 2nd French Corps from the north (on the 22nd). The German 19th Amy, initially surprised by the attack, slowly gave ground since the Allies were restricted to the road network and German troops turned each town or village into a fortress. By the 26th of January, the 2e Division Blindée was ready to cross La Blind (a river) to help assault Jebsheim, Grüssenheim, and Elsenheim. The initial French assault on the 26th was to take Grüssenheim was stopped by German infantry supported by Nashorns.
