Overview:
After the defeat of the Nationalist armies by communist forces on the mainland China in 1946, the Nationalists formed alliances with the bandits in western Hunan Province. The Nationalists intent was to carry on a guerrilla war against the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the communist government. The bandits were holed up in and around the rugged, mountainous, and historically poorly-controlled area surrounding Bamianshan ("Eight-sided Mountain") a few miles north of the city of Llye. The Nationalist "Temporarily Organized 1st Army," consisted of regular army troops, joined with the bandits at Bamianshan. The PLA tasked their 141st Division with the defeat of the Nationalist/Bandit Army. The 141st Division undertook extensive mountain warfare training and were issued nw mountain-climbing equipment. In early January 1950, the PLA encircled Bamianshan. On 19 January, elements of the 141st Division climbed the unguarded cliffs on the south side of the mountain to attack.Attacker: Chinese Communists (141st Division, 47th Army, People's Liberation Army)
