Company L of the 157th Regimental Combat Team was assigned to the breakout from the Anzio beachhead. On the first day, the company ran into difficulties near Carano. Platoon Sergeant Van T. Barfoot, after clearing a series of trenches and woods with grenades, led a small group of GIs to a railroad embankment overpass. The Germans, determined to recapture the trench line and woods, counterattacked. Barfoot had only two rounds for his bazooka to face the enemy tanks.
