Operation Varsity. the airborne phase of Plunder, would include the British 6th Airborne Division "Red Devils" commanded by Major General Eric L. Bols and the U.S. 17th Airborne Division "Thunder From Heaven" commanded by Major General William "Bud" Miley, in the largest airborne drop made in a single day. The Douglas C-47 and Curtiss C-46 transport aircraft were poised and ready. The gliders were neatly placed on the runways, awaiting connection to their tugs.
