Overview:

To take Luga, a Soviet strongpoint on the "Leningrad Highway", the German 409th Infantry Regiment crossed the Oredezh River with plans to take the village of Panikovo. As they moved toward the village the Russians sprung a trap, sending troops and tanks into the flank of the Germans. In an effort to speed their attack through the dense woods, the Germans had brought no A-T guns. Their only course of action was to form a "hedgehog" and await relief.

2025-07-08(A) Craig Renier vs Bob Piepho German winThe Russians failed most MCs and Rally attempts. Two AFVs were immobilized by the German OBA. Another AFV malf'd a MA. A poor attack plan was crushed by the German dice. In Turn 4, the Russians had attained only 6 VPs of 26 required. With only 4 squads, 3 HSs, and 3 AFVs, the Russians conceded.
2025-05-05(A) Jim Liang vs Jeff Taylor Russian win

(VASL Log)
2025-04-13(D) Michel Bongiovanni vs Philippe Duchon German win
2024-02-11(D) Peyton Spreacker vs Brandon Dega Russian winAt the start of the game, an unlucky morale check led to the "1" activation of Russian sniper. Direction die roll placed it on leader with radio alone in a hex far from the front. OBA was knocked out. A second leader close by dashed for the radio and made it, but before an attempt of contact could be made, yet another sniper miraculously killed this leader on the radio. With OBA effectively knocked out, the remainder of the game was a grind with Russians taking at least four squads prisoner and a single Russian tank landed two CH on infantry targets. There was a valiant push from the German StuG reinforcements, but alas, it was not enough and the Russians won the day in Turn 3.
2022-01-17(D) Vilis Pavulans vs Matt Velazquez German winRussians started by assaulting all across the line with infantry and without AFV backup which proved costly. Then, luck decided that german AFVs come in turn 2. All Russian AFVs came in along the western side and so did the german AFVs knocking out one right away, immobilising a second. Then hunting down the remaining russian AFVs managing to knock out one more and immobilising another. Russians had run out of infantry and couldn´t push it any further.
2021-11-21(D) Eric Gray vs Scott Gray Russian winRussians pulled it off achieving the required VPs on turn 6 with a T26 hitting and knocking out a StuG while on the move. Excellent scenario and pretty well played by both sides. The StuG's did manage to knock out 5 of the 6 T26's but a German mmc surrendering really put the Soviets over the top.
2021-10-01(A) Dave Mareske vs Craig Renier Russian winBarely achieved the victory. German reinforcements came early and several Russian 11s and 12s eventually broke all the tanks. Did get to flame one of the STUGs with a MOL though and captured a couple of Germans. Craig did a great job of falling back and staying out of the Russian LOS for some close shots. Well played, came down to the end.
2021-10-01(D) Craig Renier vs Dave Mareske Russian winThe Germans made two serious blunders. First, early in the game, the Germans missed a rare opportunity to lay down a Fire Lane with the HMG which allowed the Russians to cross the open road and break a MMC in the center of the battle. Then, a couple turns later, attempting to Assault Move to reclaim the HMG cost the Germans another MMC. The Russian dice rolls along with the 80 mm MTR OBA and early reinforcements helped the Germans hold on despite the errors. However, losing a Stug to a MOL gave the Russians a much needed boost to just meet the VP threshold.
2021-06-08(A) Kevin Duval vs Dwayne Duval Russian winUsed German balance. Was looking fair for Germans in first 3 Turns but reinforcements charging headlong into the rear facing of Russian AFV on Turn 4 did not pay off. Lucky Intensive Fire shots knocked out two for the win.
2021-06-08(D) Dwayne Duval vs Kevin Duval Russian win
2021-05-17(A) Matt Peterson vs James Treu Russian winRussian won after some very hot rolling. Several snake eyes on key hits. 18 VP acquired.
2021-04-15(A) James Forrest vs German winRussians amassed 16 CVP, though 20 were required due to German reinforcement arrival. Otherwise a close game.
2021-03-27(D) Rob Schmitt vs Scott Martin Russian winI played German Defender. Turn 3 loss to due VP casualties. Central area defense. I had the 9-1 leader up front with the Radio to direct OBA. This did not work out as he was broken during turn 1, never got a chance to use the OBA. Russian tank tactics included keeping his tanks “In Motion” to ensure no Start movement rolls, and then put his AFVs in the same hex vs Infantry in woods and building hexes while using bypass movement. This essentially “pinned” the German infantry. While pinned, the Russians swarmed the Germans and forced broken/DM units to surrender in mass. Game was over before the Stug IIIs could have any effect. I got them on turn 3 but it was too late. March Madness 2021.
2020-12-31(D) Shane Pask vs German winFirst Russian shot of the game activated sniper who shot and killed Russian 8-1 leader and broke MMG squad. Sniper attacked this stack twice more before moving on. Stgs arrived turn 2 and went tank hunting. Forgot Stg III have limited AP initially, remembered after 2 guns malfed. Still managed a kill with HE.
5 tank MA malf, 3 disable including AL. 4 shocks, 2 fatal. At game end only 2 Russian AFV on board, both immob, 1 gun malf, 1 disabled.
Turn 6 Russians only had 13VP of 18 needed so rushed all they had left and almost won. A lucky CC scored 3 points but they could get no more.
2020-04-08(A) John Garlic vs Ed Barnes Russian win[Imported from ROAR]
2019-06-21(D) Dave Mareske vs Mark Pandori German winPlayed at Texas Tournament. German Stugs came on late and the Russians had hard time getting the Germans broken. Two Russian tanks went down to MG fire!
2019-02-18(D) Ulric Schwela vs Edo Giaroni German winAs German I decided to string out as far back as possible in order to avoid a human wave in the opening MPh, with the farm marking the left flank. Everyone was in a continuous line, and I thought I would have a turn to entrench. The Russian assaulted spread out down the centre and on my right, with the T-26s in two platoons aiming to encircle the farm building. The OBA worked well, immediately disrupting the Russian infantry. My interlocking LMG were a dismal failure, however the HMG worked well and vapourised units bypassing woods even at 10 hexes with 9-3 shots. The entrenching was also a bad idea, too difficult to execute although the couple I managed added valuable protection. The StuGs arrived early and entered bottom right to further reinforce my strong flank (alternatively I could have entered left to take a T-26 platoon in the derrière); this was probably a poor use but luck was on my side as multiple 45 mm shots pinged off the StuGs. The Russian mortar was also underperforming, hitting my HMG in woods to no effect, while my MTR and ATR were quickly knocked out by Russian MMG and T-26s. Just as the Russian was closing in on the farm, in quick succession a T-26 was Shocked by the OBA, another was Shocked by a StuG and a third brewed up behind a wall by a CH. At this point my opponent lost his PMC as we were both down to 7 GO squads and 3 functioning AFV each, while the Russian only had one leader left and he had only clocked up 1 CVP, although being the 3rd turn I felt it could still have swung back to the Russian. More replayability than meets the eye.
2018-07-28(A) Dave Mareske vs Tony Pierson Russian winSaw a recent playing of this and it made it to the top of my play list. Tony got the STUGs early and they almost tipped the game, but he Malf'ed one of the guns and another fell to one of the T-26s, but three of the Russian tanks lay smoking in the field. The German OBA really did not do its job and then the leader and radio fell to CC on turn three. The Russians never did a Human Wave, though I intended to do so. Germans were breaking so my Russians could move up slowly but surely.
2018-04-21(D) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best German winAnother great scenario against Dan Best. His Russians were relentless in assaulting my Germans. My left flank crumbled like saltine crackers, but I held in the center and on the right long enough for the Stugs to help me eek out the win. Dan managed to get 15 of the 22 CVP needed, but my Landsers survived. Bloody losses on both sides with 75% Russian losses and 60% German.
2018-04-21(A) Dan Best vs Kermit Mullins German win
2018-02-09(A) Tom Kearney vs Eric Alleman Russian win
2017-10-14(A) David Garvin vs Peter Courtney Russian winToday was a game day at my place. Matthew and Peter came over and we had a match of ASL 129 "Slamming of the Door" in Beyond Valor 3rd Edition. I started as Soviets and was up against Peter, who was later joined by Matthew as they collaborated on the defense.
My forces were coming to hit him from my right, with a view to setting up a human wave on that side. My tanks (radioless) are moving as a blob to help get around and behind the Russians.
The best laid plans....
Due to Peter's initial defensive fire, my human wave plan fell apart, but the best part of my plan was my light mortar. It went on successive rate tears and ended up breaking all of his forces on my right. I ended up capturing the lot of them and escorted them back out of harm's way. I then decided to press on the attack with my tanks moving up on him and some of my infantry moving around to the other side, again with a view to blocking his rout paths.
It all ended on Turn 5 (out of 6). . I broke his guys on my left and then eliminated their ability to rout. Also, to seal the deal, my Russians committed a war crime and massacred the prisoners. (But by doing so, in my defense, I ended the game. LOL)
In the end, the key part of the game was the Soviet light mortar. Even though the German HMG ended up with a rate tear or two of its own, that little mortar tore great holes in the German line.
Snipers were quite active in spite of the low SAN. Well, the German one was, and he pinned and broke a number of Soviet Squads.

In the end, Soviet win, but not without cost. German fire tore into my ranks, and given that my own losses didn't alter the victory conditions, my commissar made sure every man knew his duty.
Play of the game? My mortar targeted the German light mortar and got a rate tear, but the 2 down 1 shots did little, until I finally got the German to roll a morale check. Pete promptly rolled 1,1. The HOB roll was a 6, resulting in Heat of Battle *and* Hero. That hero survived the match (wounded), but the squad promptly ELRd back to a 1st line squad, and CRd, of course, on a 12.
2017-06-03(D) Jeff B vs Ryan Ellett German win2.75 hrsIf the OBA works (which mine did), and the reinforcements enter early (which mine did), and they set up in the southeast corner behind the hedgerow, I really don't see the Russians standing much of a chance. I think their only option would be to amass their forces and try an armored assault human wave, and this could be hampered by effective German shooting. One of the few defensive scenarios I have played where skulking wasn't even considered.
2017-03-04(D) Christopher Howard vs Mal Russian winMy opponent absolutely outplayed me. My leader with the radio was wiped out, so OBA wasn't used. My tanks came on early, but two of them were immediately wiped out. I might be terrible at this game, but I had fun!
2017-02-08(A) Martí Cabré vs German Fernandez Russian winI quickly moved against the first German positions and overruned them with human waves. My tanks arrived and closed in to the central German position. Harassing OBA began to fall to hinder both my movement and fire and the German assault guns arrived in Turn 3 and destroyed three of the Russian tanks. On Turn 4 the Russians assaulted the central building and broke the defenders, capturing them for the 20 VP needed to win.

2015-03-28(D) Seumas Hoskins vs Matthew Clark German winGermany quickly consolidated on the multihex house and while the Russians focused their approach on the west end and closed the gap quickly few human waves, they were able to maintain a foothold in the building. Several shots made with the T-26s left half with disabled MAs, and 4 of them with jammed MGs. German OBA was able to maintain its Fire Mission creating area denial from the NW long enough for the Stugs to arrive and seal the deal.
2015-02-05(D) Gordon Jupp vs Derek Cox Russian winYet another good game against Derek :) Unfortunately although I did a reasonable job with the infantry I got to rash with the Stugs and lost due to the CVP cap....doh! Good fun tho!
2014-07-17(D) Will Willow vs Roy Connelly German winVASL
2014-03-08(D) Andy Beaton vs Richard Hooks German winArtillery broke up one Russian flank allowing the Germans to fall back and delay.
2013-10-11(A) Martí Cabré vs Ivan Kent German winI launched a massive Human Wave on Turn 1 with everything, as I could get into the German lines for a devastating effect. A couple of units broke but a lucky 1,1 KIA two squads with the commissar. In the ensuing CCs two more German 1,1 KIA four more Russian squads and with half my units lost in Turn 1 I decided to concede and move on.
