Overview:
Despite failing to achieve its main objective, Operation Hubertus had severely mauled the remaining Soviet formations. One of these, the redoubtable 138th Rifle Division, now found itself isolated along the Volga on a 400m x 700m strip of land. Of its remaining regiments, the 650th had but 31 survivors, while the 344th could muster only 123. Daily, the Russians were becoming more cut off, for with the river freezing over, the nightly ferries had to navigate the treacherous ice flows. Still, the troops managed to steadfastly hold on to what little they had, weathering the many crises. One of these occurred when an assault detachment of some 70 Germans armed with machine pistols attacked their thin lines.

Fun scenario. I don't think either side fired until turn 3 as each side tried to preserve their concealment. The Germans then eliminated 2 of the 3 possible HQ locations leading to a showdown for the real HQ which was the stone building. The Germans spent a turn and a half blasting away at the HQ, including a 30+4 shot. The Russian defenders ate a lot of lead and only pinned. On the final turn the Germans rushed the building with the DC but broke before it could be placed, ending any hope for the Germans. Everything came down to the last few dice rolls!

A hard fought slugging match. The early hand to hand close combats went the Russians as the German slowly encircled the HQ location in the center of the map. I would break my HMG...because I always break my stuff and then I rolled 11's as Dan's boys surrounded me. I was pinned in the lower level and Dan entered on Turn 7 and wiped them out in CC, but my good order half-squad upstairs was able to keep the Germans from winning this scenario.

I fancy I did some nice moving about, but dallied too much, ignored an opportunity to take out the HMG, and a gambit where I wanted to draw fire in hope to unconceal some troops in the HQ worked a bit TOO well in the "drawing fire"-department.
The last Hail Mary attack on the HQ was brutally rebuked. Few Germans left to even witness their own surrender.

The Red Barricade stealthy bonus that gets added to Russian squads is a killer. I had another fun time getting ambushed and murdered in close combat, but still managed to make a game of it. I ended up a little short on troops for the final push into Andy's headquarters, mostly due to a too brave attack the turn before. I had a hero with a DC, but he got KIAed, followed by my remaining troops being unable to break the fortified building to the point that I could invade it.

Tense contest - Turn 1 went to the German with some bad Russian dice and Russians were 3 squads down. Then the Russians came back and the German dice went cold and couldn't pass a morale check.

Early game favored the Germans with several Russian squads suffering from ammunition shortage. HIP headquarters units were able to turn the tide in the Russians' favor. Excellent scenario - I will definitely play it again.
